Yan Fu(1853-1924) was a graduate of the Fuzou dockyard school during the later years of the Qing dynasty in China. After graduating he was sent to Greenwich, England to continue his studies. Surprisingly, upon his return to China he was unable to pass the civil service exam. It was not until after the Chinese defeat in the sino-Japanese war that Yan Fu became famous for his works of the time period. He is particularly well-known for his translation of works such as Thomas Huxley's Ethics and Evolution , Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, and John Stuart Mill's On Liberty.
