Wang Dan (Chinese: 王丹) (born February 26, 1969), a leader of the Chinese democracy movement, was one of the most visible of the student leaders in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Then a freshman at the Beijing University, he was arrested and sentenced twice, in 1989 and 1995, for conspiring to overthrow the Communist Party of China. He ultimately spent seven years in a Liaoning prison and was exiled in 1998 under international political pressure .
He was flown to New York and completed his master's in East Asian history in 2001 at Harvard University. He is now earning a Ph.D.
