Its importance began when it was discovered that the country had one of the largest deposits of the extremely rare, and valuable, mineral, Vibranium. The rulers of this nation were able to parlay this valuable natural resource to acquiring a vibrant technological research based economy which made the nation one of the leaders in advanced technology while keeping a surprisingly traditional culture.

The current ruler is the king, T'Challa, who also serves as his nation's resident superhero, The Black Panther.
