The Venture program is an optional program for Boy Scout Troops of the Boy Scouts of America for older (13 and above) Boy Scouts.
The program was rolled out in 1989, replacing the previous Leadership Corps program. The program consisted of "Venture Crews", which would engage in high-adventure activities, and "Varsity Teams" (NOT to be confused with Varsity Scout Teams) which would engage in sport activities. The idea was that the older boys would form one of these groups, choice an activity, and participate in it for about three months. At the end, they would receive the Venture Letter (redesigned Varsity Scout Letter, and also used by Varsity Scouts) and possible one of 26 Venture activity pins (also used by Varsity Scouts). They would then reform the group, choicing a new activity.
Initially, girls could participate with the group as guests, but this was a feature that was quitely dropped early on.
The only special insignia for this program were the "Venture" and "Varsity" strips, worn above the "Boy Scouts of America" strip.
In 1996, to avoid confusion with Varsity Scout Teams, the use of the term "Varsity Team" was dropped. Now Venture Crews could engage in either high-adventure or sports activities.
In 1998, to avoid confusion with the new Venturing program being rolled out, Venture Crews would be renamed "Venture Patrols". This was to avoid confusion with "Venturing Crews". To this day, people still use the term "Venture Crew", sometimes to refer to Venturing Crews, sometimes to refer to Venture Patrols. Some seem to think the Venture Patrols are just "the Venturing program in a troop", thinking that the boys can earn Venturing Awards (they can't) or wear the Venturing green shirt (they can't). You also see some using the term "Venture Scout", which is also incorrect, either to refer to Venturers or Boy Scouts in Venture Patrols.
Due to the lack of good information on the program, rumors of its demise have been persisting for years. Most recently, some think that Venture Patrols may not use the Venture Letter or pins, claiming they are now ONLY for the use of Varsity Scouts
