It is located in the province of Southern Finland and is part of the Kymenlaakso region. The municipality has a population of 11,238 (2003) and covers an area of 1,004.40 kmē of which 143.47 kmē is water. The population density is 13.1 inhabitants per kmē.
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
