Udupi

Udupi is a city located in Karnataka near the city of Mangalore on the south east coast of India. Udupi is the home of a famous Krishna temple and the AshTa (eight) maThas.

Udupi District

Udupi is a district of Karnataka state. Udupi district was created in August 1997 the three northern taluks, Udupi, Kundapur and Karkal , were separated from Dakshina Kannada district to form Udupi district. The administrative headquarters of Udupi district is Udupi. Population (2001) 1,109,494, a 6.88% increase from 1991.

The primary languages of Udupi district are Tulu, Kannada, and Konkani. Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts are sometimes referred to as Tulu Nadu, as they constitute the Tulu-majority region.

Udupi restaurants that are popular all over India and have found its way into other countries also. Udupi restaurants are typically south Indian vegetarian restaurants.


The AshTa MaThas of Udupi

Udupi is known for the Krishna Mutt and the ashta mathas which take over the responsibility of running the krishna matt by handing over the authority to each other in an order at regular time periods by a occasion marked as 'Paryaya'. Udupi, along with Shringeri is among those places where large number of sanskrit scholars are found in India.
