Toco Beach

Toco Beach

Toco Beach is on of the most popular tourist attractions on the island of Trinidad. It is located on the northeast side of the island, a three hours mountanous drive from the capital city of Port of Spain. However, what makes this beach different than most of the other Caribbean beaches, is the Leatherback Turtles that come here to lay their eggs. Mature Leatherback Turtles can be seen laying their eggs during the night between October and January, while hatchlings can be seen emerging from the sand netween April and June. Because of the many predators of the Leatherback Turtles, locals run a program where they collect hatching turtles before they can be attacked by circling raptors, and release them into the ocean after a few days to increase this endangered species' chance of survival.

There are a few hotels that you can stay at while visitting Toco Beach, which are all located right on the beach. If you want, you can watch the turtles hatch or lay eggs from your veranda or cafe, or you can go with a hotel sponsored guide at night who will find turtles and answer any questions you have about them.
