South Kaibab Trail

South Kaibab Trail is a hiking trail in Grand Canyon National Park in the U.S. state of Arizona. It starts near Yaki Point on the south rim of the canyon. It follows a switchback path through the initial thousand foot descent. There are many photo points along the trail. At 1.5 miles (2.4 km), comes the Cedar Ridge, a beautiful stop with pit-toilets. It makes a nice picnic stop, too. The next leg goes along the O'Neill Butte. After another 3 miles, comes the Tonto Trail Junction. It has toilets and an emergency phone. At 6 miles (9.7 km) along the trail and 2640 feet (805 m) into the canyon, the South Kaibab crisscrosses the Colorado River Trail. Here, there is a footbridge to the other side of the canyon. The Bright Angel Campground is the first point along the trail to have water and a ranger station. Also in this area is the Phantom Ranch , a lodge built for hikers at the bottom. Here, the trail ends. For down-and-up hiking, take the Bright Angel Trail for returning, as this trail is less steep than the South Kaibab. For rim-to-rim hiking, use the North Kaibab Trail to get back to the north rim, which, incedentally, is extremely scenic. The South Kaibab Trail is the alternative canyon trail to the more famous Bright Angel Trail. However, it is just as (if not more) beautiful.
