The Scindias are the erstwhile rulers of the princely state of Gwalior have contested the elections (parliamentary or assembly) held in Madhya Pradesh. For almost two and half decades between 1970 and 1998 the late Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia and late Madhavrao Scindia contested parliamentary elections from Madhya Pradesh on different party tickets.
The Scindias - mother, son, daughters and grandson all have contested the elections under different parties but have never contested against one another. Scindias have contested from their strongholds in Guna, Gwalior, Bhind and Jhalawar in Rajasthan.
The popularity of Scindias could be judged by the fact that the late Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia won seven parliamentary elections. She first won from Guna in 1957. Her son Madhavrao Scindia won the parliamentary elections nine times from Guna and Gwalior on a Congress ticket. In 1984 Madhavrao had defeated BJP's Atal Bihari Vajpayee by a huge margin. Madhavrao was a leading Congress politician and held Cabinet posts in a number of governments.
Vijayaraje's daughter Vasundhara Raje Scindia contested and has won five parliamentary elections from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. In 2003 she led the Bharatiya Janata Party to its largest majority in Rajastan . Her other daughter Yashodharaje contested the 1998 assembly elections from Shivpuri and won.
After Madhavrao's tragic death in a plane crash his son Jyotiraditya Scindia won the Guna by-elections by a margin of 4.5 lakh votes.
