11th SS Panzergrenadier Division
11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland
Formed in Croatia in 1943 as the 11th SS Panzergrenadier Division, composed of the Nordland regiment of SS Division Wiking plus smaller Waffen-SS contingents from Norway and Denmark. Later redesignated 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland to indicate its composition of foreign volunteers from Scandinavia.
Transferred to the Russian Front in December 1943, where it fought under Army Group North near Leningrad and was slowly pushed back to Courland along with the rest of the front line over the course of 1944. Fought in Pomerania in early 1945, and was finally destroyed in the Battle of Berlin.
The division's assault gun battalion was named after Hermann von Salza (1179-1239), fourth Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights.
