Ostrogothia Cavalry Regiment, or Östgöta kavalleriregemente is a Swedish Army cavalry regiment that traces its origins back to the 16th Century. It was reorganized into an infantry regiment in 1791.
History
The regiment has its origins in the fanor raised in the 1550s. In 1619, these smaller units where organized into the Ostrogothia Grand Regiment, and in 1623, this grand regiment was spilt into three regiments, one of those being the Ostrogothia Cavalry Regiment. The regiment's soldiers were conscripted from the province of Ostrogothia. It was one of the original 8 Swedish cavalry regiments mentioned in the Swedish constitution of 1634.
The regiment was officially raised in 1636 although it had existed since the 1620s. The regiment's first commander was Hans Rotkirch. Ostrogothia Cavalry Regiment was tenemented in 1687. It was merged with the Ostrogothia Infantry Regiment in 1791 to form the Life Grenadier Regiment. The unit was renamed to the Life Grenadier Regiment Rusthåll Division and had some sort of semi-independence.
