The 'Newcastle-under-Lyme Canal was a 6 mile stretch of canal, built in two parts. The first, linking the town with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stoke-on-Trent was granted its Act of Parliament in 1795 and was completed in 1800. The second part, completed soon after linked the town to Sir Nigel Gresley's Canal . The canal's main cargo was coal.
