National Motorists Association

The National Motorists Association is a non-profit political interest group in the United States and Canada.

The primary focus of the group is the opposition to what it believes are unfair traffic laws, particularly artificially low speed limits, and the enforcement of these for revenue purposes.

The group was founded in response to the universal 55 mile per hour speed limit which was imposed in 1975. The NMA's efforts led to the partial repeal of this in 1987 and the complete return of speed limits to local control in 1995.

Today the NMA attempts to educate the public about illegitimate traffic enforcement and tries to influence local government to raise speed limits and direct police resources to more serious crimes.

Among its tactics is "civil obedience day" when members actually drive at the posted speed limit, which generally leads to gridlock. It also awards a "Highway Bandit of the Year" to a jurisdiction which uses traffic laws for revenue purposes.
