The Mittellandkanal is, at 320 km, the longest artificial waterway in Germany. It branches off the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Dortmund, runs north along the Teutoburg Forest, past Hannover and meets with the Elbe at Magdeburg. At Magdeburg it connects to the Elbe-Havel Canal , making a continuous shipping route to Berlin and on to Poland. At Minden the canal crosses the Weser on two viaducts (second completed in 1998). Connections by side canals exist at Osnabrück, Hildesheim and Salzgitter. West of Wolfsburg, the Elbe side canal branches, over which (via the Elbe-Lübeck Canal) a connection to the Baltic Sea exists. Cities on the Mittellandkanal are:
