Mitchelstown (Baile Mhistéala in Irish) is an agricultural based town in northeast Cork. It is the home of Dairygold Co-Op, large dairy and pig based farmers whose brand names include Galtee, Dairygold, Mitchelstown, and Ballyclough Sno.

There was an 8th century round tower at Brigown until the 19th century. The basis for the modern town was planned by the Earl of Kingston between 1775 and 1820. He built Mitchelstown Castle , modeled after 1798 Windsor. The castle was later burned by rebel soldiers in 1922 to prevent it, and other public buildings in town, from being used by government troops during the civil war. Subsequently, the site of the castle was later used to house a Mitchelstown Creameries factory.

In 1887, Irish Land League campaigners, including local man John Mandeville, helped organise a rent strike at the estate of Lady Kingston near Mitchelstown. On 9 September, three estate tenants were shot dead, and others wounded, by police at the town's courthouse where MP William O'Brien had been brought for trial for inciting non-payment of rent – this event became known as the Mitchelstown Massacre and is at least partly commemorated by a memorial to Mandeville unveiled in 1906 by O'Brien himself.
