Man-at-arms

Man-at-arms was a medieval term for a warrior or soldier, specifically a heavily armed and armoured mounted soldier. He could be a knight or a commoner.

When addressed to a professional soldier in a regular national army, the term is normally used as an honorary connotation, but would probably be considered odd usage by most.
