Khorugh is the administrative centre of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan, situated on the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Khorugh has a population of no more than 40 000, but has its own university (since 1992), twelve schools and several hospitals. It is connected to the capital city of Dushanbe by the Khorugh-Dushanbe road and to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan by the Khorugh-Osh road, both of which are very difficult to pass, especially during winter and spring. Khorugh also has a small airport, which can only accommodate very small capacity airplanes and helicopters.
