Jean Metzinger

Jean Metzinger (1883-1956) was a French painter.

Initially he was influenced by Fauvism and Impressionism but since 1908 he was associated with Cubism. He was a member of the Section d'Or artistic group.

Together with Albert Gleizes he wrote the first major treatise on Cubism, Du Cubisme in 1912. Though never on a par with the genius Cubists Picasso and Braque, he was nevertheless a superbly talented painter with a great eye and a lively spirit.

In the later phase of his career he moved away from cubism towards realism but retained some elements of cubistic style.
