Flight 350 was a McDonnell Douglas DC-8-61 on a domestic scheduled passenger flight from Fukuoka, Japan, to Tokyo.
On February 9, 1982, Flight 350 was on approach to Haneda Airport when the captain reversed the DC-8's inboard engines in order to destroy the aircraft.
The first officer and flight engineer worked to restrain him and get control. Despite the first officer's best efforts, the DC-8 (JA8061) fell 300 meters short of the runway in shallow water.
Among the 166 passengers and 8 crew, 24 passengers were killed, with no losses among the crew. It was later learned that the captain suffered a psychosomatic disorder prior to the incident, and was known to be mentally ill.
