James Arbuthnot

The Right Honourable James Norwich Arbuthnot (born August 4, 1952) is a British politician and member of the Conservative Party. He is the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Hampshire North-East.

He was first elected by North East Hampshire in the 1997 general election, and was re-elected in 2001 (see United Kingdom general election, 2001). He had previously been the MP for Wanstead and Woodford in East London.

Arbuthnot served as a Whip and in various ministerial posts under the government of John Major. Under the opposition leadership of William Hague he served as opposition Chief Whip. He then became a backbencher but is now Shadow Secretary of State for Trade.

Arbuthnot is the younger son of Sir John Sinclair Wemyss Arbuthnot, 1st Bt, MP. He is a barrister who is married and has four children.
