Jaime Garzón was a Colombian journalist and political satirist. On August 13, 1999, Garzón was murdered by the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC), a right-wing paramilitary organization. The leader of the AUC, Carlos Castaño Gil, was later convicted in abstentia for Garzón's murder, and sentenced to 38 years in prison.
