Ontario provincial highway 416

(Redirected from Highway 416)

Highway 416 is a 400-Series Highway in eastern Ontario that forms an important connection between Highway 417 in Ottawa and Highway 401 near Prescott. It also acts as an important trade corridor from Interstate 81 between New York and eastern Ontario via 60 km of Highway 401.

Highway 416 is the newest MTO-operated 400-series highway, and was built to completion in the 1990s, opening in its entirety in 1999. It replaced the old two-lane Highway 16, which was very congested and proved to be quite dangerous. The entire route is a four-lane controlled access freeway.

The routing was somewhat controversial; some thought the Ottawa to Highway 401 connection should have gone along Highway 7 to Carleton Place and then Highway 15 to near Kingston or Gananoque which would have likely been called Highway 415; while the Highway 417 to Carleton Place freeway expansion of Highway 7 is planned, no further construction of such route has been discussed.

On June 6, 1999, Highway 416 was dedicated and named the Veterans Memorial Highway, as a symbol of remembrance to Ontario veterans.
