Gottschalk (Slavic prince)

Gottschalk, Prince of Vends, (Latin Godescalcus) (d. June 7, 1066), son of Udo, Prince of the Abrodites , established a Slavic kingdom on Elbe in North-East Germany. The kingdom was destroyed by Bernard II, Duke of Saxony and land given to Ratibor . Gottschalk was later employed by Canute the Great to fight with Norway. After Ratibor's death he returned and reestablished his kingdom. Gottschalk someimes considered saint for christianizing Slavs. Died in a religious uprising. Gottschalk was mentioned by historian Adam von Bremen.
