Geography

The highest mountains in Pamirs and in Central Asia are located here, with Lenin Peak (7134m, on the border with Kyrgyzstan), Communism Peak (Ismail Samani) (7495m), and Peak Pobeda (7439m).

Demographics

The region is populated mostly by ethnic Tajiks, with a minority of Kyrgyz living mostly in the Murgab area.

Transportation

Only two easily navigable roads connect GBAR to the outside world, Khorog-Osh and Khorog-Dushanbe. A third road from Khorog to Tashkurgan in China is very rough. Gorno-Badakhshan is separated from Pakistan by the narrow, but nearly impassable, Wakhan Corridor.
