Gidon Kremer

Gidon Kremer (born in Riga, Latvia on February 27, 1947) is a Latvian violinist and conductor.

He first studied violin with his father and grandfather at the age of four. He studied with David Oistrakh. In 1967, he won the Queen Elizabeth Competition (second prize) and won (first prize) Paganini competition (Genoa 1969) and International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow 1970).

In the late 1990s he formed two string orchestras, the Kremerata Baltica, and Kremerata Musica from young players from the Baltic region.

Kremer is widely respected and is known for championing the work of 20th century composers, notably the Argentine Astor Piazolla, Philip Glass, Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, and John Coolidge Adams. Among the many composers who have dedicated work to him is Sofia Gubaidulina (Offertorium).
