Appointed Governor of Las Californias from 1768-1770 under Spanish rule. He was of noble birth, born in Catalonia. Portolà, along with father Juniper Serra (from Mallorca), lead an expedition to the Californias in the XVIII century, then part of New Spain and founded most of the California Missions.
