Frederica von Stade

Frederica von Stade (b. June 1, 1945) is an American mezzo-soprano.

She was born in Somerville, New Jersey, and grew up loving opera. She made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1970, and has since performed many roles with the Met. She has also performed with almost every major opera company in the United States.

In addition to her opera work, she has also performed and recorded new recordings of numerous musicals, such as The Sound of Music and Show Boat, as well as appearing on numerous PBS specials, most notably in 1991's A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert .

Miss von Stade was the featured performer at the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Miss von Stade was the idol of a key character in the CBS series Northern Exposure (her music appeared on its original soundtrack album).
