The European Health Insurance Card (or EHIC) allows citizens of the EEA countries and Switzerland to recieve emergency medical treatment in another member state for free or at a reduced cost. It is not for any pre-existing medical condition, but only for accidents and emergencys. Therefore it does not render travel insurance obsolete.
The French dependency of Guadeloupe also accepts the card.
It is designed to replace the following medical forms:
- E110 - For international road hauliers
- E111 - For tourists
- E119 - For unemployed / Job seekers
- E128 - For students and workers in another member state.
The card is being phased in from June 1 2004 and throughout 2005.
