Elmet

Elmet is an area of West Yorkshire in England. It was at one time an expansive Celtic kingdom covering large areas of the north of England, but the only official traces of this remain in the place names of some local villages: Barwick-in-Elmet; Scholes-in-Elmet; and Sherburn-in-Elmet.

Elmet is now the name of the local parliamentary constituency, prior to 1983 it was a part of the Barkston Ash constituency. Elmet has historically always been a marginal seat due to the demographic makeup of the region, in contrast to Barkston Ash which was traditionally Tory.

The area is the subject of an acclaimed 1979 book combining photography and poetry; Remains of Elmet, by Ted Hughes and Fay Godwin.
