Echo Base

Echo Base is a geographical location from the science-fiction Star Wars universe. It is a series of tunnels and caverns cut from the icy mountain side of Hoth. The Rebel Alliance established this base right after the Battle of Yavin. The evacuation was part of the plan since the destruction of the first Death Star most inevitably brought a part of the Imperial fleet on them. Echo Base was the site of a major ground battle between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Empire sent powerful assault units to Hoth such as the AT-AT, while the Rebels used much smaller landspeeders modified for the cold climate of Hoth, called the Snowspeeder. The Empire wanted to crush the Rebels, while the Alliance just tried to buy time for the inevitable evacuation of Echo Base.

Echo Base suffered a series of Wampa ice creature attacks (though not featured in the movies; but is mentioned within the book) soon after Commander Skywalker's encounter with the creature.

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Echo Base is also featured in the Star-Wars based video game, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. In the game, the player's character, Jaden is sent on a mission to Echo Base in order to find out information about the Cult of Ragnos . The player ends up finding the Base re-occupied by the Imperial Remnants.

Also, when Luke and Callista return to Hoth a decade after the base's evacuation, they encountered a band of desperate wampa-pelt hunters whose luck had run out and who were now holed up in the deserted Base while their hungry quarry waited outside. Though the two Jedi tried to rescue the group, the wampas demonstrated their uncanny ability to work together as a killing team. Luke and Callista barely escaped from Hoth with their lives.
