Don't mess with Texas

The phrase "Don't mess with Texas" began as a television advertising campaign by the Texas Department of Transportation designed to reduce littering on Texas roadways. But Texans so liked the phrase that they have since appropriated it for general use — the slogan appears on everything from bumper stickers to postcards as a general warning not to disrespect the state. Since the campaign started in 1986, it has been used in television, radio and billboard advertisements educating Texans to keep trash off the streets.
