Damian Marley is the youngest of reggae legend Bob Marley's children, and the only child born to Marley and Cindy Breakspeare , Miss World 1976. Damian was born in Kingston, Jamaica on July 21, 1978. Damian performs under the nickname Junior Gong which is derived from his father's nickname of Tuff Gong.
A talented artist in his own right, Damian has been performing since the age of 13. He shares with his brothers and sisters a full-time career in the Marley family business, music. Unlike his brothers and sisters, however, his musical specialty is "dj", a more melodic Jamaican form of rap/hip-hop. He is very much at home in this element, as his stage presence attests, and he is also an adept song-writer. As of 2004 he had released three albums, and his third, Halfway Tree, was the 2002 recipient of the Grammy award for Best Reggae Album. Damian frequently tours with his brother Julian and is a member of the Ghetto Youth Crew , their own band.
In the Summer of 2004 Damian participated in the 27-city Bob Marley Roots, Rock, Reggae Festival Tour with his four brothers, Ziggy, Julian, Stephen and Ky-Mani , each of whom have their own professional recording careers. The tour marked the first time the brothers had officially combined their unique talents and musical styles on the same stage.
Damian is currently working on his fourth album set for release in 2005. Like his father before him and the rest of the Marley clan, he is a natural Rastafarian and his music reflects both his beliefs and the Rastafarian guiding principles of one love, one planet and freedom for all. While he travels and tours the better part of the year, his home base is split between Kingston, Jamaica and Miami, Florida. He is single and has no children.
