The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is one of the seven universities in Hong Kong, it is also one of the oldest. CUHK was founded in 1963 when New Asia College (1949), Chung Chi College (1951) and United College (1956) were amalgamated. Shaw College joined in 1986 to become one of the four member colleges of today's CUHK.
The university motto, in Chinese, is (博文約禮), meaning "broaden one's intellectual horizon and keep within the bounds of propriety". The words come from the Analects of Confucius. The motto suggests both the intellectual and moral aspects are the emphases of its education.
The campus is located at the bay of Tolo Harbour just north of the town of Shatin. It occupies a total area of 1.3 km² with more than 130 state-of-the-art buildings and is the biggest in Hong Kong.
CUHK hosts one of the only two medical schools in Hong Kong, the other being at the University of Hong Kong.
It can be reached by the Kowloon Canton Railway at the University Station.
In 2002, a controversial discussion about the amalgamation of CUHK with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was started by the government, but was later dismissed.
Organization
The University's Chancellor is Dr Donald Tsang, KBE, ,GBM, JP, the Chief Executive(Acting) of Hong Kong. The Vice-Chancellor is Professor Lawrence J. Lau, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors are Prof. Kenneth Young, Prof. Liu Pak-wai and Prof. Cheng Chun-yiu, Jack.

Faculties
At present, there are seven faculties: The Faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Science and Social Science. Fifty-three full-time undergraduate programmes and two part-time degree programmes leading to bachelor's degrees are offered by the sixty-one departments within the seven faculties.
Graduate School
There are a total of fifty-four graduate divisions in CUHK. The University offers ten postgraduate diploma programmes, one hundred and twenty-three master programmes and sixty-one doctoral programmes in the academic year 2002/03.
