The Chevrolet Astro is a Chevrolet Mid-sized Van introduced in 1985 to rival domestic (U.S.) competitors which consisted of Chrysler's Caravan and Ford's Aerostar. Also sharing the platform with the Astro is its sibling at GMC, the Safari. General Motors announced in 2004 that the Safari and Astro will be discontinued in 2005, and the Baltimore, Maryland assembly plant where both are built will be closed.
The Astro and the Safari both have popular followings with modifiers, especially in California. Modifications are both street and offroad, and many owners prefer to replace the V6 motor with a smallblock V8 motor.
