Chadli Bendjedid (born April 14, 1929) was President of Algeria from February 9, 1979 to January 11, 1992. He is a former soldier in the Algerian liberation movement. He was minister of defense from November 1978 to February 1979 and became president following the death of Houari Boumédiènne. He was forced out of the presidency by the military following the 1991 elections.
