Bioenergetics
Bioenergetics is the generic name for a wide range of cathartic techniques used in psychotherapy. Developed out of Wilhelm Reich's character analysis and Alexander Lowen's Bioenergetic Analysis it is both a psychotherapeutic discipline in itself, and a common adjunct to technique in therapy and encounter groups. The most recognisable bioenergetic techniques are hitting a pile of mattresses with a racquet or the fists, and lying on a mat kicking and yelling. The endeavour of bioenergetic therapy is the expression of emotion to release repressed feelings and memories.
