"Ashokan Farewell" is the title theme song composed for the television miniseries The Civil War which aired on PBS in 1990. Composed by Jay Ungar in 1982 in the style of a Scottish lament or Irish Air, the song is the only contemporary song used for the soundtrack. Viewers of the program frequently - and erroneously - believed it was written and performed during the Civil War. All other music played on the program's soundtrack was authentic 19th century music.
The song is named for the Ashokan Field Campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz, where Ungar held a series of summer music camps.
