Arnold Toynbee
Arnold Toynbee (1852-1883) was an economic historian, the uncle of Arnold J. Toynbee with whom he is sometimes confused.
Toynbee was born in London, England, and taught economic history at Balliol College, Oxford. He was interested in social reform, and also worked with adult students. Toynbee was one of the first to use the phrase, "Industrial Revolution".
Toynbee Hall, a university settlement in east London, was named after him by its founder, friend and fellow social reformer Samuel Barnett.
