Amélie Nothomb (born August 13, 1967) is a Belgian writer. She was born in Kobe, Japan from Belgian parents before travelling to China, New York, Bangladesh, Burma and Laos. Her first novel, Hygiène de l'assassin was published in 1992. She then published a novel by year with a.o. Les Catilinaires (1995), Stupeur et tremblements (1999) and Métaphysique des tubes (2000).
Amélie moved very often, before discovering Europe, more precisely, Bruxelles, where she feels as much a stranger as everywhere else. She studied philology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. After facing troubles in her family she returned to Tokyo to work in a big Japanese company. After this experience, later told in Fear and Trembling, she went back to Bruxells and published Hygiène de l'assassin , in 1992.
She currently lives in Brussels, writing. She says she writes three novels a year, publishing only one.
