70 Panopaea is a large main belt asteroid. It orbits within the Eunomia asteroid family. However, it is a dark, primitive carbonaceous C-type asteroid and likely not related to the parent body of the Eunomia family.
Panopaea was discovered by H. Goldschmidt on May 5, 1861. It was his fourteenth and last asteroid discovery. It is named after Panopea, a nymph in Greek mythology.
