Dating to 1572 the 3rd Regiment of Foot was one of the oldest regiments in the British Army.

Its names have included:

• 1665-1689 The Holland Regiment
• 1689-1708 Prince George of Denmark's Regiment
• 1751-1782 3rd Regiment of Foot - or The Buffs
• 1782-1881 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs)
• 1881-1935 The Buffs (East Kent Regiment)
• 1935-1961 The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment)

In 1961 it was amalgamated with the The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment to form

The Queen's Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment
