Émile Benveniste

Emile Benveniste (1902 - 1976) was a French linguist best known for his work on Indo-European languages and his work expanding the linguistic paradigm established by Ferdinand de Saussure. Initially a student of Antoine Meillet, he began teaching at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and was elected to the Collège de France a decade later in 1937. He is best remembered today for his Problems in General Linguistics, whose two volume appeared in 1966 and 1974 respectively.
