Etymology
jack + daw . The former element may refer either to its characteristic call, often represented as tchak-tchak , or to the name Jack. The latter, daw , means "jackdaw" in itself, from Old English daƿe , and is cognate with Old High German tahe , which through Middle High German tahele became modern German Dohle .
